David Hilbert's program and Kurt Gödel's incompleteness theorems are also examined, along with the foundational systems of W. V. Quine and the relevance of categorical algebra for foundations. This monograph will be of interest to students, teachers, practitioners, and researchers in mathematics.

The Handbook of Categorical Algebra is designed to give, in three volumes, a detailed account of what should be known by everybody working in, or using, category theory.

As such it will be a unique reference. Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading Handbook of Categorical Algebra: Volume 1, Basic Category Theory (Encyclopedia of /5(3). Categorical algebra and its applications contain several fundamental papers on general category theory, by the top specialists in the field, and many interesting papers on the applications of category theory in functional analysis, algebraic topology, algebraic geometry, general topology, ring theory, cohomology, differential geometry, group theory, mathematical logic and computer sciences.

The Handbook of Categorical Algebra is intended to give, in three volumes, a rather detailed account of what, ideally, everybody working Categorical algebra and its applications book category theory should know, whatever the specific topic of research they have chosen.

The book is planned also to serve as a reference book for both specialists in the field and all those using category theory as a tool. The book is planned also to serve as a reference book for both specialists in the field and all those using category theory as a tool.

Volume 3 begins with the essential aspects of the theory of locales, proceeding to a study in chapter 2 of the sheaves on a locale and on a topological space, in their various equivalent presentations: functors Cited by:   Handbook of Categorical Algebra: Volume 1, Basic Category Theory by Francis Borceux, available at Book Depository with free delivery worldwide/5(11).

Handbook of Categorical Algebra: Volume 2, Categories and Structures Francis Borceux The second volume, which assumes familiarity with the material in the first, introduces important classes of categories that have played a fundamental role in the subject's development and applications.

In higher-dimensional algebra (HDA), a double groupoid is a generalisation of a one-dimensional groupoid to two dimensions, and the latter groupoid can be considered as a special case of a category with all invertible arrows, or morphisms.

Double groupoids are often used to capture information about geometrical objects such as higher-dimensional manifolds (or n-dimensional manifolds). A Handbook of Categorical Algebra, in three volumes, is a detailed account of everything a mathematician needs to know about category theory. Each volume is self-contained and is accessible to graduate students with a good background in mathematics. The mindset of the book is categorical, and as far as I remember every concept that can be introduced and explained categorically is explained in that way.

Some concepts are introduced as needed (it is an algebra book, not a category theory book), such as adjoint functors which are introduced to explain the free-forgetful adjunction. Category theory is a young subject yet has, by now, contributed its share of substantial theorems to the vast body of mathematics.

In certain areas, I consider that it has also managed to revolutionize thinking. Examples of such areas, and the innovative categorical concepts, are: homological algebra: abelian category [F, Sch, Gt].
